Sport Exchange Australia was founded on the idea that sport can bring nations closer. With input from our partners in academia, government and professional sport, we’re now creating opportunities for people and organisations to work and grow together through sport. We value the passion and enthusiasm of our partners, and rely on their expertise to help us generate goodwill and cultivate relationships with sporting communities around the globe.
The Australian Trade and Investment Commission, known as Austrade, supports the trade and investment activity of the Australian business sector. It attracts game-changing investment to Australia, encourages the development of new industries, supports the growth of local research and development, and helps strengthen global supply chains. The advice and support that Austrade provides to Australian businesses helps them minimise their commercial risks as they engage with global markets.
Australian Rules football has been played in some form since the 1850s. Teams including Melbourne and Geelong, are among the oldest continuously operating sporting clubs anywhere in the world, and many current clubs, at both local and elite level, have histories dating back 150 years of more. Today, the Australian Football League oversees the 18-team men’s competition, and the 14-team women’s competition. The AFL also manages an extensive community program, ensuring that Indigenous communities, LGBTQ+ communities, and people of diverse abilities and cultural backgrounds all get the opportunity to experience the benefits of the game.
Based on the Queensland Gold Coast, Bond University is a private, not-for-profit university. As an independent institution, Bond encourages an innovative and enterprising mindset among its students and has consistently ranked highly for Overall Student Experience in the annual Student Experience Survey from the Department of Education, Skills and Employment. Experts from Bond University were involved in the development of the Sports Diplomacy 2030 strategy.
Cricket Australia is responsible for the game in Australia, including domestic and international competitions, and the national men’s and women’s teams. More than 700,000 Australians are registered participants of the game, with more than one in three of those being girls or women. The organisation is committed to supporting diversity among its players, but also to ensuring that it actively promotes a respectful and inclusive culture both on and off the field.
Football Australia is the national governing body for football in Australia (also known as soccer). A member of FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation, Football Australia is a former member of the Oceania Football Confederation, and is responsible for the management of Australia’s national football teams, including the Socceroos and the Westfield Matildas. Football Australia has worked with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to engage sporting communities in more than 30 countries worldwide. It was the sporting partner of the 2018 ASEAN Australia Special Summit, and will be involved in Australia’s representation at the rescheduled Expo 2020 Dubai.
Since its inception in 1975, Griffith University in Queensland has had a strong connection with Asia-Pacific, and has been a key contributor to research and public debate across the region. It has a tradition of introducing innovative new courses, and was among the first Australian universities to offer degrees in disciplines such as Asian Studies and Environmental Science. Griffith regularly ranks in the top 2 percent of universities worldwide. Griffith University experts were involved in the development of the Sports Diplomacy 2030 strategy.
Based in Melbourne with campuses in regional Victoria, the highly regarded La Trobe University consistently ranks among the top 400 international universities, and has been identified as one of the 50 best universities in the Asia-Pacific region. The La Trobe Sports Park is a world-class facility custom-built to support teaching and research for community and elite sport. La Trobe is working with Sports Exchange Australia on the development of the Sports Diplomacy Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for the Australian and international sports communities.
The National Rugby League (NRL) manages the NRL Premiership, featuring club teams from around Australia and New Zealand. In a typical year, the Premiership attracts around three million people to its matches and more than 100 million viewers on television. The NRL is also responsible for the NRL Nines, NRL Touch Football, and the national men’s and women’s teams, known as the Kangaroos and the Jillaroos respectively. The organisation proudly supports the largest and most comprehensive community relations program in Australian sport, and is a leader in sport-for-development programs across Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.
Netball Australia is the peak body for eight state and territory organisations, representing more than 500,000 members and participants nation-wide. Netball Australia sees itself as a social change agent as well as a sporting organisation. It is aware of its own social responsibility, and excited by the potential for netball to positively impact the social, political, economic, educational and health status of women and girls. Around the world, netball is the largest female community-based sport, with more than 70 participating nations.
The Department of Health, through its Office for Sport, drives improved opportunities for community participation in sport and physical activity, and excellence in high-performance athletes. This is achieved through investment in sport programs and infrastructure, coordination of Commonwealth involvement in major sporting events, and research and international cooperation on sport issues.
The delivery and support of health outcomes and the government’s broader socio-economic policy objectives are pursued through the provision of policy, program and operational advice.
Rugby Australia, previously known as the Australian Rugby Union, is the governing body of rugby union in Australia. In addition to overseeing clubs and competitions across the country, the organisation also supports the national men’s team, the Wallabies, and the national women’s team, the Wallaroos. Rugby Australia is committed to the delivery of programs that support the participation of First Nations communities, and people of diverse abilities, genders and sexualities.
Sport Australia (SportAus) plays a central leadership role in Australian sport, building collaboration, alignment and effectiveness among the sporting organisations and physical activity providers that together form the broader sport and physical activity sector. It also provides financial support for infrastructure and programs that encourage Australians of diverse abilities, identities and backgrounds to participate and excel in sport.
Tennis Australia promotes and supports the game of tennis across Australia and manages the delivery of international events including the Australian open and the Davis Cup. As well as supporting player development around the country, the organisation also invests in the construction and maintenance of tennis infrastructure. Tennis Australia is currently involved in a range of activities in the Pacific, including professional development programs, and the delivery of a gender equality program in collaboration with Tennis Fiji.
Tourism Australia is the Australian Government agency responsible for attracting international visitors to Australia, both for leisure and business events. It supports the local tourism industry through a range of activities including advertising, PR and media, trade shows, industry programs, consumer promotions, online communications and consumer research. Tourism Australia actively promotes Australia as a travel destination in 15 world markets including Greater China, Japan and South Korea, and South and South-East Asia.
